Wikipedia Wins Erasmus Prize 2015
|The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation awards the 2015 Erasmus Prize to Wikipedia. Wikipedia receives the prize because it has promoted the dissemination of knowledge through a comprehensive and universally accessible encyclopaedia.
To achieve that, according to the Foundation, the initiators of Wikipedia have designed a new and effective democratic platform.
The prize specifically recognises Wikipedia as a community – a shared project that involves tens of thousands of volunteers around the world who help shape this initiative.
The Erasmus Prize is awarded annually to a person or institution that has made an exceptional contribution to culture, society or social science.
The award consists of a cash prize of € 150,000. The prize will be awarded to representatives of the Wikipedia community at a date to be determined in the autumn of 2015.
