Justice Yashwant Varma Case: Google AI Suggests 10 Questions for the Inquiry Committee

By Rakesh Raman

In the cash-at-home case of Justice Yashwant Varma, the Supreme Court of India constituted a 3-member committee on March 22, 2025 to hold an investigation into the alleged corruption scandal.

Since most such investigations in India are ordered to exonerate the corrupt officials, I shared the Supreme Court document with Google artificial intelligence (AI) platform to frame 10 questions for the inquiry committee. The questions generated by Google AI are given below.

Here are 10 important questions generated by Google AI that the 3-member committee should ask in their investigation, drawing on the provided sources:

  • Regarding the storeroom: Can you provide a precise description of the storeroom’s location in relation to your main residence, including details about its accessibility, who typically used it, and the frequency of its use by different individuals (servants, gardeners, CPWD personnel, etc.)?

  • Concerning the night of the fire (14th/15th March 2025): Could you detail the sequence of events as you understand them, from the outbreak of the fire to the arrival of emergency services and the police, including who was present at the residence and their actions?

  • About the discovery of cash: When were you first informed about the discovery of a large amount of cash, and what specific details were you given about the amount, its condition (burnt/unburnt), and its location within the storeroom?

  • Regarding the removal of debris: Who instructed or carried out the removal of debris and half-burnt articles from the storeroom on the morning of 15th March 2025, and what was the precise nature of the items removed? Were any records kept of this removal?

  • On the alleged cash: You have stated that no cash belonging to you or your family was kept in the storeroom. Can you provide details of where you and your family typically store significant amounts of cash at your residence, and can you explain the usual sources of your cash holdings (e.g., bank withdrawals, other income)?

  • Concerning your travel: Please provide evidence of your and your wife’s travel to Madhya Pradesh, including dates, flight details, and accommodation records, to corroborate your absence from Delhi at the time of the fire and alleged cash discovery.

  • About the video and photographs: You mentioned being shown a video and photographs by the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and expressing shock at their contents, suggesting they depicted something not found on site. Can you specifically describe what you saw in the video/photographs that differed from your understanding or what you observed at the storeroom?

  • Regarding the alleged conspiracy: You have expressed apprehension about a conspiracy to frame you. Can you elaborate on the reasons for this suspicion, including any specific events or individuals you believe might be involved, and what their potential motives could be?

  • About your household staff and security: Can you provide a list of all household staff, personal security officers, and security guards posted at your residence during the relevant period (last six months), and can the committee interview these individuals independently to gather their accounts of the events and their knowledge of the storeroom and any cash?

  • Concerning the PCR call: The PCR call was made by your Personal Secretary. What was the immediate reason for this call, who instructed them to make it, and what information did they provide to the authorities regarding the fire and any potential discoveries?
