Tech company IBM has expressed its intentions to replace at least 7,800 jobs with artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The IBM workers who will be laid off mostly handle back-office operations such as the human resource management.
According to media reports published on May 1, IBM has planned to replace 30% of its non-customer-facing workforce with AI systems in the next 5 years.
The main reason for IBM’s decision to remove people and deploy AI platforms is the innovations like ChatGPT (or Generative Pre-trained Transformer). ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence or AI-based online tool called chatbot which generates human-like text responses to prompts or user queries. It was launched by OpenAI in November 2022.
In a recent editorial interview with RMN Digital editor Rakesh Raman, ChatGPT admitted that AI language models like ChatGPT have the potential to automate certain tasks that were previously performed by humans, and this could potentially lead to job displacement in some industries.
However, ChatGPT said, it’s important to note that AI is also creating new job opportunities in fields such as data science, machine learning, and software engineering.

Additionally, according to ChatGPT, AI can also augment human work by assisting with tasks, making work more efficient, and enabling humans to focus on higher-level and more creative tasks.
Overall, ChatGPT said, the impact of AI on the job market is a complex and multifaceted issue, and it’s likely that both positive and negative effects will be seen as AI continues to be developed and integrated into various industries.
The important thing is to ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed fairly and that policies and programs are in place to support workers who may be affected by job displacement, ChatGPT suggested in the interview.
Meanwhile, BBC has cited a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs which says that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs. While AI has the potential of replacing 25% of job roles in the U.S. and Europe, the new AI models can also enhance productivity of organizations.
The report adds that AI could help increase the total annual value of goods and services produced globally by 7%, as Generative AI content is more useful than the human output in an organization.
